Let’s Talk About Head Lice

Head lice can spread easily, especially when kids are in close contact with each other every day; and this is the one-time that sharing is not caring. Head lice are often called nits, however there is a difference:

Head Lice are tiny, wingless insects that live in human hair and feed on the blood circulating in the scalp.

Nits are the eggs of adult head lice. Once lice lay nits, the nits take about a week to hatch.

Head lice are annoying, but they’re not dangerous and they don’t spread disease. They’re not a sign of poor hygiene — head lice need blood, and they don’t mind whether it’s from someone who’s clean or dirty. It’s best to treat head lice right away to prevent them from spreading.

Prevent Head Lice

There is currently no way to prevent head lice completely but here are some easy tips and tricks to keep them at bay

Tip #1: Do weekly or regular checks using a fine tooth comb.
Tip #2: Tie up long hair, the less strands available for lice to grab onto the better.
Tip #3: Use a small amount of hairspray, this makes the hair sticky and uninhabitable.

If you think your child has head lice, don’t stress! There are several things you can do to fight them off in no time.

The best way to find out if they have it or not is to use the conditioner and comb method.

Apply a large amount of conditioner to dry, detangled hair and using a comb go through the hair in small sections. You can wipe the comb onto a tissue or paper towel where it will be easier to see them.

If you find lice or eggs in your child’s hair, use a treatment and remember, you may have to treat the whole family. These treatments will break the cycle and stop the spread. You can also contact your local pharmacy.

Finally, once the hair has broken free from the cycle, use a defence spray to minimise re-infestation. The spray is made up of a blend of oils that deter the lice and make the hair too slippery to grip onto.
