Please note that the following information is general in nature and for more detailed information about COVID-19 we recommend visiting the Health Department website in your state.
In order to help slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect yourself and your loved ones, it is vital to practise good hygiene and physical distancing and to follow the rules for public gatherings, quarantine and isolation.
Good hygiene includes washing your hands, covering your coughs and maintaining the cleanliness of your home and workplaces. Hand washing simply but thoroughly with normal soap and water is perfect but sometimes hand sanitisers are more convenient, and Emslie’s Floreat Pharmacy can help advise you what sanitisers are most effective.
Physical distancing includes keeping 1.5 metres away from others wherever possible, avoiding physical greetings such as handshaking, hugs and kisses and avoiding crowds and large public gatherings where possible.
A person with coronavirus (COVID-19) or who is suspected to have it must enter isolation. That may be at the hospital if required, at home, or somewhere your relevant health authority requires. Isolation means that you:
Quarantine is quite different to isolation in that it is required when you are well but may have been in contact with someone with COVID-19. If this happens you will need to isolate yourself from others to prevent the spread of the virus. The quarantine period is 14 days from when you may have been in contact with the virus.
In Australia, the routine use of face masks in the community is currently not recommended, while the rate of community transmission of COVID-19 is low.
However, some members of the public may choose to wear a face mask in situations where it is not feasible to maintain physical distancing, like on public transport and/or if they are at increased risk of severe illness if infected (e.g. because of their age or a chronic medical condition).
If you choose to wear a mask it is important to do so safely to avoid increasing the risk of infection to yourself and others.
How to put on a disposable face mask:
People with chronic respiratory conditions should seek medical advice before using a mask.
While there are many being worked on around the world, there is currently no vaccine for COVID-19. However, there is flu vaccination and in the Floreat and Wembley areas in Perth, you can get yours at Emslie’s Floreat Compounding Pharmacy.
You should get a flu shot as getting the flu and COVID-19 at the same time can make you very ill.
