Let’s Talk About Digestive Upsets

Your digestive system is an important part of your body that is connected to a number of different organs, including your brain! This means that any digestive system upsets can directly impact your mood and overall wellbeing.

The digestive system is made up of gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) and breaks food & drink into small parts like amino acids, fatty acids & sugar.

The food we eat, on an average takes 7 seconds to reach stomach but it’s not just stomach that play the biggest role in absorption of nutrients. The stomach starts the digestion process and other organs like small intestine and large intestine helps in digestion.

Around one in five Australians experiences unpleasant symptoms of an upset digestive system at some time. This includes acute diarrhoea that although it may be short term and clear up in 3 or 4 days without treatment, can still be an uncomfortable experience to endure. Thankfully, we have some recommendations that may help…

Digestive problems such as diarrhoea can be caused by a number of different physical and psychological triggers.
If you are having acute diarrhoea problems, some common triggers to avoid are:

  • Stress
  • Fatty, greasy meals
  • Overeating
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Eating too quickly
  • Lack of exercise

If you suspect you are experiencing an infection or food poisoning, please speak to your health professional.

Diarrhoea is a symptom defined as passing frequent loose, watery stools. It is associated with the loss of water and electrolytes (e.g., potassium, sodium, magnesium) from your body.

Treatment for acute diarrhoea depends on the cause, but may include:

  • plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
  • oral rehydration drinks to replace lost salts and minerals
  • Increase consumption of starchy foods like banana, rice and bread and yoghurt containing  live cultures.
  • medications such as antibiotics and anti-nausea drugs
  • anti-diarrhoeal medications

Try Chemists’ Own Diarrhoea Relief Melts Tablets for effective relief of acute non-specific diarrhoea and associated symptoms such as abdominal cramps and pain and frequent passing of loose, watery faeces.
Always see your doctor if you experience serious symptoms. Babies and young children with diarrhoea need prompt medical attention.
